The government has announced plans to lower the age threshold for the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) from 80 to 65 years, effective in the 2026/2027 financial year.
Speaking to journalists today at the Media Centre in Kampala, Dominic Mafwabi Madudu, Minister of State for the Elderly, said the initiative will be supported by an additional UGX 252.16 billion in the 2026/2027 budget, bringing total SAGE funding to UGX 373.36 billion.
He also added that the government has increased the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment(SAGE) for older persons from sh25,000 to sh35,000 per month
This increase is expected to raise the number of beneficiaries from the current 306,759 to 1,048,598, effectively tripling coverage.

Dominic Mafwabi noted that the changes will take effect in the next financial year(2026/2027).
SAGE iis a social protection programme by the Ugandan Government that provides monthly cash transfers to eligible older persons to combat poverty
Through this programme, Senior citizens receive support to meet their basic Needs and live dignified lives.
